TuesdayToday I was with first years going through bridal hair and make-up learning all the face shapes and how the light effects the make-up. we done different up-styles to how a bride would want her hair if it was up or down, curls or straight and short of long hair, this class is very helpful to my hairdressing career as it gives me more of an option how to do a brides hair the way she would like it on her big day. I was also a model for one of the girls for her assessment. In my last class I was a model for a hair up assessment for another student, this was very interesting to see how other students would work and what level they are at. WednesdayIt was open salon in the class today where students would bring in models for assessments or if there was no models you would work on a dolls head. Today I spent the day experimenting with crazy colours, I was never into the crazy colour but after getting into it I really enjoyed making new colours. ThursdayToday I would usually be in class with first years learning about competition work but the second years were busy and needed a helping hand in the open salon I spent the morning on clients with colours, cuts and blow dries. I learnt that I now have the confidence to make it out in a salon. The last class I was in a cutting class going over cutting all though I know my cuts this felt good to go over basics. FridayToday is the last day in the college before I head home. I spent the day in open salon with second years again giving a hand with highlights and cutting. The salon was busy and worked through the morning and lunch before I left to catch the bus to the airport. I time in the college was amazing I leant so many new ways and techniques that I can take home with me. The salon is really nice and the teachers are so good at their jobs. I have made so many new friends that I will be keeping in contact with. This was a great opportunity to do and would recommend it to anyone.

Day 13
Today we arrived at Broadwood stadium and to our delight Queen Of The south were training here today. We met with Ross in the physio room, this really is a lovely atmosphere to work in as in is more informal as oppose to working in a salon environment, the work is challenging but very enjoyable. There was not really a whole lot for us to do today as there were not many injuries from the Rangers game at the weekend. Ross was doing ankle strapping's when we went in which was good to watch again. When Ross first showed us how to do ankle strappings the other week I struggled to get mine on neat and I was pleased to hear that Ross had the same issues when he first started doing them, so he said keep practicing and you will get the hang of it. A few of the lads needed massage on their hamstrings and quads. I did a massage on one lads hamstrings who we have been massaging since we have been there and he seems to be improving a lot. I then gave the manager of the team a back and shoulder massage which he really enjoyed. We went up to the gym with Ross and a few of the lads and he was giving them different exercises to do which was good to watch, seeing how a physio instructs players in a gym setting. It was a great day today, our last day working with Queen Of The South and I was sad leaving, I think I can speak for myself, Valentina and Amanda when I say we have really enjoyed our time working here and we all found it to be such a great experience. Day 14 Our last day of our work experience in Glasgow, it has been a great experience but we are all looking forward to going home. We were working in the Salon today in the college at Coatbridge in Glasgow. We all did various treatments. Amanda and Valentina gave Reflexology and Aroma Massage treatments to clients and I gave 2 full body Aroma Massages. I feel today was of benefit to us all although we were all very tired and looking forward to the end of the day and going home. The manager of the salon was quite stressed today as there was problems with the bookings and they had treatments scheduled for a therapist that was not even in so this caused some upheval. Myself and Amanda feel that we enjoyed working with the football team more than we did working in the salon as it felt more laid back and relaxed. I found it a lot easier to work in a tracksuit as oppose to working in a formal uniform such as trousers and a tunic. Valentina really enjoyed working with the football team aswel but also enjoyed the salon and would like more of a mix between the two. I personally have grown as a person and have become more confident in myself as a result of the trip, I have made nice new friends and got over my fear of flying! We have all really enjoyed our time in Glasgow and have learned a lot. We are grateful for the opportunity and experience. We would like to thank all in Galway Technical Institute, all of our collegues in Glasgow and all involved in the Erasmus project for all of the organisation and support we have been given. -Lewis- Today we were in Broadwood, working with The Queen of the South football team. I love working with Ross the physio as I find it very beneficial and am really learning a lot! Today the team were in training for their big game on Saturday! They were playing Rangers, who are a very good team. They were very hyped for the game, all the players training their best to make the first team. We had very little injuries today as every body wanted to play Saturday and I couldn't blame them, from their hype it sounded like a great game for them to play. We had a few ankle strapping's before the training, it was very interesting to see that they all got their ankles taped differently, as some liked maximum coverage and some just a little support, no strapping was the same. As the lads started the training, we only had two main injuries, one of the lads had very tight hamstrings that just wouldn't loosen up! We've been working on him since we began in Broadwood. Ross put a machine on him to help stimulate his muscle, after twenty minutes I then gave his hamstrings a rub. When I was done Ross sent him up to the gym to do some exercise and stretches to help ease up his leg. The second lad with an injury had a tight groin that when Ross worked on that it turned out that he didn't have a tight groin but a tight hip instead. It was interesting to see how Ross worked on the lad to see what really was the underlying problem and how he dealt with it. After loosening up his groin and his he too was sent up to the gym to cycle for twenty minutes and then Ross would show him some exercises after. When we joined Ross in the gym, he showed us different stretching methods for different injuries, we really did learn a lot from him here, it was great that he allowed us to work hand in hand with him, not just shadow him. After the team finished training they went for lunch. We then got to see what type of exercise training that the do in the gym. We had the experience of doing the training that they did, it was very enduring I have to say. Today was a great day and I felt that I learnt a lot and that I can bring all that I learnt today back home with me! Like most evenings, we had a family dinner of course, sometime it is hard cooking for to vegetarians and two people that love meat. But we manage to compromise. -Amanda Day 11 Today really was a waste of a day to us. We had such a great learning day on Day 10 that Day 11 was a huge disappointment. Queen of the South weren't training today so we were in the New College Lanarkshire in the building next door. Not much student were in as it was a bank holiday here the day before. When we got to the college we just sat around for two hours, we were told that we were to join an exercise to music class. We waited patiently in the waiting area, to no avail, nobody came for us. We have found that in our placement that they really weren't set upfr us as we don't have any structure what so ever to our days and never know what tasks are going to be in hand on any given day. Fed up of sitting any longer, as we have full use of an amazing gym, we went there for three hours, trying out all of the amazing equipment that they have and also learning some aerobic yoga from Valentina! We enjoyed our time at the gym and boy did we feel it the next day! -Amanda Day 12 Arriving at the New College Lanarkshire in Broadwood today, as the Queen of the South were training on different grounds today, we were hoping that today would be some what better than the day before. David was great at always getting us something to do, never just dropping us off and leaving it to our selves to figure out. He's a great man to have on the job, always working on our behalf. Today he talked to Todd to see where he could fit us in today. Today we were to be joining a circuit training course. We were excited to hear about this. It turned out it was very enduring and very hard for Valentina, Lewis and I to keep up with their pace, they were used to this where as as it turn out, we are very unfit ha. We joined in anyways and did the full circuit, it almost killed us but we did it! After a lot of water and a few deep breaths, we then gave the students post event massages! We were wrecked ourselves but we pushed through it! We had a well deserved power lunch after this, which we really deserved. Later on in the day we met up with teachers Ally and David, the Anatomy & Physiology an Nutrition teachers. They talked to us about what they thought to their students. It was very interesting to see the different type of Anatomy & Physiology an Nutrition that the students here learn. In a short amount of time we learnt a lot. He even took down our email addresses so that he could could send us the slides of what he was teaching us. Even though it was a tough day, we learnt a lot at the end of it. -Amanda MONDAY
Monday morning was my second week of attending a male grooming class, this was very interesting for me as it isn't part of my course back in Galway. I really enjoyed this class as I can see now that I will be doing it in the near future. It came naturally to me as in reality male hair is the same as women's, just shorter. During this class I got to experiment with some crazy colours, something I haven't done since my first year in GTI. Male grooming took up most of my day today in college, I really enjoyed learning some new skills and would be totally confident cutting and styling men's hair now. That evening I was in a practical skills class, the students in my class were first years so in a way I had the upper hand, getting to show off all the up styles that I knew. Mainly I was helping other students as they were still in the learning process of these up styles. TUESDAY Tuesday morning my class consisted of further up styling and the finishing touches that came with an up style, such as secured bobby pins, hair spray and gels. I really enjoyed this class as I was with second years, who were on my level. I learnt a lot from them as did they from me. That afternoon I had a class for bridal hair and make-up. Make-up isn't something that I do in my course, so I was really looking forward to getting the experience as to how to apply bridal make-up. The class went very well and I feel as if I learnt a lot, I think it is something that I can take with me to help me further my career. I might do a make-up course or two when I get back to Ireland thanks to today. Later on I was a model for a hairdressing student, for one of her exams. It was great to see the marking criteria that they have over here. I felt that her exam went very well, loving my hair and make-up. Overall today was a very good learning day and I feel that I will be taking a lot that I learnt today home with me. WEDNESDAY Today was more of an observing day for me as a lot of the students had there exams today. While they were doing their exams I was aloud to walk around the exam room and see what the student were doing. Even picking up a few tips to bring home with me for my own exams. In the last hour of the class I had the chance to show off my cutting techniques to one of the main teachers, I really enjoyed this and felt like I learnt a lot from today. THURSDAY Today I was doing competition work, it was really fun to see what styles the other student were coming up with and meshing up what I knew with their work. I had the joy of using crazy colour today along with doing a cut. Next week though they have said that they are going to move me to a second year class as they are swamped and need me to help out. Day One Today myself and Aoife continued to attend classes in the college, we started off our day with pedicures, followed by gels and finally current salon. In current salon we got to practice our shellac skills, this was very beneficial to us as we don't normally get to practice this treatment at home in college. After college we took the Glasgow City bus tour, this allowed us to view some of the wonderful sites around Glasgow and while also giving us an insight into to the history. Day Two We started off the day by attending another current salon class, we both practised waxing and I gave Aoife a back massage. This was also beneficial as we have exams in these treatments when we arrive home. We were then lucky enough to receive full body massages each as we were models for our current classmates. In the evening we then had our manicure class and both carried out treatments on each other. Day Three Our first class today was waxing, where Aoife carried out a brow tint and wax on a fellow classmate Stacey. We then had an acrylic nail class, we learned sculptable acrylics and Aoife was able to practise on one of the girls in the class. We were then brought to Celtic Park, where we got a tour of the grounds and got learn about al the history of the football team. It was a very interesting experience even if you aren't a football fan. Day Four In the morning we had a class in gel nails again, this allowed us to practise this skill again which is something we wouldn't get a chance to do at home in college in GTI. At the end of the college day Aoife got a chance to do a full set of gel nails and Katie carried out a pedicure. After college we took the train out to Balloch to see the aquarium, which was nice activity to pass the evening. Exploring Edinburgh We took train to Edinburgh, where we got to visit the Edinburgh Castle and walked the Royal Mile. We also did a Scotch Whiskey tour and visited the Edinburgh Zoo. Unfortunately the weather was very wet and cold so hopefully in the future was can vista the city on a better day. Day 8 of our work experience here in Glasgow saw us work with the sports students at Broadwood stadium, we practiced our massage techniques including back massage, legs and arms. The students had requested for us to work with them again as we had done last week. This made us all feel very confident in our work, to be asked to do further treatments. We worked with the students for a few hours and we all got great feedback from them. In the afternoon we went for a tour of Celtic Park which was a cool experience. Even if you are not a Celtic fan it is really impressive to see the stadium and grounds as the club has a lot of history. Former player and manager David Hay brought us to celtic park which was a great experience, we all got pictures with him beside the pitch. Day 9 saw us work with Queen of the south Foot Ball Club at Broadwood Stadium. They were playing Rangers Saturday and so it was good to see how they train and prepare for a big game. We did some massage on some of the players. We then went up to the gym where the physio Ross showed us some rehabilation exercises which he was giving to some injured players, this was good to see and is a very important part of the success of the team, making sure injured players get the best possible care when they are injured to ensure they have the best chance of recovering quickly and properly.
Today we were at broadwood stadium working with Queen Of The South Football Club. First of all this morning we met with the team physio Ross and we worked on some injured players. One player was injured last week and suffered bad brusing to his thigh muscles, Last week the brusing was quite severe and this week it looked to be much better. Ross put a machine called a compex onto the thigh, this machine uses electrical pulses to contract and relax the muscles thus bringing more oxygen to the affected area. After the machine was taken off I did some light effleurage on the area. Another player hurt his ankle this morning while training and so Ross put a machine called a Game Ready, which is a machine which uses ice to quickly cool an injured area. After the machine had finished Amanda and Valentina did some massage work on the ankle aswel as massaing his thighs which were also tight. We did not have to do many rub downs today as all of the team were going to the gym after to do strength training. We went along with the team to the gym were we got to see how a Professional Football Team Trains in the gym. This was a great experience for us all and one we thoroughly enjoyed.
Day One - New College Lanarkshire Today we were greeted by David Hay and Deborah at reception who were very friendly and helpful, giving us as much information as possible. We then met with Jackie who gave us our timetable and gave us a tour of the beauty section of the college which was amazing. We were then brought to our first class which was Gel Nails which was fab as we do not get the opportunity to do them in college at home. It was a great experience and all the students were so friendly and accommodating. Class after Gel Nails was Current Salon which basically meant the students could do anything from waxing to massage to nails, based on what they wanted to practice. The girls we were with were doing shellac which we also do not get to experience in the salon so that was very interesting! Day Two - New College Lanarkshire First class was Current Make Up Trends where the girls discussed upcoming make up trends. They were also doing mood boards and we got to create our own one which was fun and creative! The beauty course is continuously assessed and the students had a massage assessment today so we were clients for two students for full body massage. The massage is completely different to ours which was very interested and very specific but also very relaxing! Our last class was manicures which we are qualified in so we did a full manicure each on the students. It was great that they used the same product lines as us as it made it easier. Day Three - New College Lanarkshire Today our classes were Waxing, Body Massage and Basic Day Make-Up which we have covered in College in GTI so we got to participate by waxing one of the students underarms and learned the way the students do a back massage which was very different to our technique as they use no oil or medium which was different. Emma, the Make-Up teacher, showed us how to contour which came out beautifully! We then joined a group in the class to see how the students did it on each other. Day Four - Beechwood Nursing Home As the college was on Industrial Action, we did our work placement in Beechwood Nursing Home which accommodated elderly people suffering from dementia, people with disabilities and those who suffered brain injuries. We did file and polishes on our clients who were very friendly. We helped them in and out of the salon. This experience was eye opening as it allowed outside our comfort zone. Although we enjoyed working with the elderly, we feel this is not the route we will go down in with our qualifications. Day Five - New College Lanarkshire On Fridays in New College the Spa and Salon is open to the public. Aoife did a full Dermologica facial and a full luxury manicure which was a great experience as I had never done a luxury manicure. One of the students sat with me to get me fresh water and was helpful with any questions I had. Katie carried out two eyebrow and lip waxes and a full dermologica facial which is something we covered in class. It was great experience to carry out the treatments on real clients in a different surrounding as in Poise Salon GTI we were used to it from last year. The students and Margaret, the teacher, was very helpful during the salon day. The Salon day is very different from GTI, as they carry out a lot more treatments. Clients get the chance to have an hour in the Hot Tub Jacuzzi and Sauna and Steam Bed to relax before their treatment. Monday saw us head back to work at broadwood stadium. We worked with the sports students today doing massage treatments. We set up in a room with 2 couches and two of us worked at a time while the other kept an eye on the time. We worked on about 5 students doing various massages on the back, shoulders, legs, neck, and arms. Today we learned how to work as a team, which is a very valuable thing to be able to do. We also practiced various massage techniques on each other while we were waiting for the students to arrive. Valentina and Amanda are practicing some stretching techniques on each other in the below pictures.
Thursday saw me travel to Beechwood care home in wishaw. All of the staff gave us a warm welcome and gave us a tour of the care home. There are three different units here caring for people with Dementia, Elderly People and people with brain injuries. I was brought up to the hair salon where I would be working for the day. I met with various people which was a very rewarding experience. I did wash and blow dries, setting peoples hair with curlers and back combing. I really enjoyed my day working in the care home. It is nice to be able to work with people and make a difference to their lives. Seeing all of the people in the care home, I learned that we all should appreciate our lives and our health because at any time it could all be taken away.
Friday I was working in the Glasgow campus of New College Lankashire. I did a class in upstyling were I learned many different techniques that will help me with my studies when I get back to GTI. I then did competition work where I learned different kinds of quirky upstyle techniques and different ways to cut hair. I really enjoyed my day and I am looking forward to Monday. |
