My boss Elis and two of my work colleagues took me to a local Spanish restaurant. We were served different types of fish including octopus, a Spanish desert and Spanish wine and of course this included Spanish conversation. Overall this was a very special evening and such a lovely way to finish off my placement in Grenoble.

Yesterday I met up with a missionary in the Veronica strip, a young woman called Rachel who helps young adults between the age of 18 -30 years to live and work in the night life area of las Americas seeking adventure and a party lifestyle but often end up in messy situations. It was very interesting talking to her and gave a different perspective on the other side to the culture. If you zoom in you can see the living room way up the top. Today I was invited to one of the local homes for tea and biscuits. Their homes are built on a hill. They have the front door entering into the sitting room and kitchen, then bedrooms and bathroom goes down stairs. I really enjoyed their company, and hearing that when it rains in tenerife the whole place closes down and warnings to stay in side. -Siobhan- Today I went to visit mount Teide volcano with a tour. It's very interesting that tenerife is a volcanic island last eruption was over100 years ago. I seen massive lava with amazing colours. I also visited a craft shop, local wine and cheese tasting. It's great to see local business thriving and all the languages they speak.
-Siobhan- On tuesday I took time to explore the island with Alana after work. Alana met me on her scooter and we explored the local areas. At work I worked on developing my Spanish further.
On Friday I worked from 12pm- 6pm. Alana met me on our new scooter and we went for a spin to the beach and met the others, after that we went for dinner-which was delicious. Then Alana gave me a lift to the gym & when I got back we all had a few drinks down by the pool with Patsy and Claire, tutors from GTI. It was really nice to catch up with everyone. -Laura- I was cleaning this morning in the ladies shop and labelling gents trousers making sure I had the right barcode for each trousers. Carmel was teaching me Spanish in between each customer leaving and arriving which I really enjoyed. My teacher Claire and Teresa called in to see how everything was going.
Alana Day 5 (Thursday): I went to work for 10am & my main duties were helping customers and staff, cleaning floors and shelves. I also re-organised the clothes on the rails. One of my co-workers- Marta taught me some Spanish & I was teaching her English. We wrote down the phrases and later in the evening I studied them by the pool. For dinner my roommates and I enjoyed some Spanish cuisine.
Laura day 7 (Saturday): I Woke up today and had to go to the hospital with my lovely injured roommate. I then returned to the apartment for a little while and chilled by the pool. I went to work for 4pm. At worked I learned about organising the merchandise where I folded and organised the clothes. Alana 8 (Sunday) : It was my day off today with my fractured foot so I woke up at 12.30. Sat at the pool all day and drank cocktails soaking in the Spanish sun! Then I helped Laura make dinner. Hopefully I get better soon because I'm looking forward to returning to work. Friday I started re-designing the shop windows the ladies section, which I found very interesting. Everything was to perfection. New stock arrived in the men's shop so I was hanging up the new arrivals. I was also putting price stickers on the clothing tags, it was in spanish but it didn't take long for me to learn it.
This morning I explored a bit of Tenerife. After a quick shop I went to the local beach for a short while. Then on my way back I spoke to a lady working for a tourist information company about the activities we can do our days off. Then I got ready for work and worked my second day 4-10 at (the 10 minutes walking distance) Hugo Boss Boutique. I really like it there, my co-workers are lovely and only speak to me in Spanish which is a great opportunity for me to practice. The only down sides are standing on your feet for 6 hours and that my hours are the most unsociable of the group!
I am working in St Oliver's bouquet, where I have two bosses. There is a ladies shop and a gents shop so I am going to both of them when either one gets busy. Ronald my boss said " I never sell, I just listen and then speak" he listens for the customers accent and speaks to them in their language. He speaks seven languages very impressive!
Yesterday was an introduction day so we were introduced to our two hosts, they brought us to where we were going to be working and made sure that we settled in okay. I am working in a boutique called Yeyo, the staff here are lovely and the owners were very welcoming.
The boutiques sells all designer brands and clothes, handbags and shoes...It caters for both women and me!! |
